Mythical Beasts: Fiction, Fact, or Something in Between?

Dragons, gryphons, cyclopes and other beloved mythical beasts have long been assumed to have originated purely as products of overactive imaginations. However, historical research has revealed that there may be some grains of truth embedded in these creatures of folklore, namely the fossil remains of long-extinct animals. Dr. Cam Tsujita of the Department of Earth Sciences (Western University) will discuss how the images of mythical beasts may represent early attempts of our ancient predecessors to make sense of fossil remains prior to the establishment of the modern science of paleontology.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. The lecture will begin at 7:00 p.m.
