The President's Lecture Series celebrates Dr. David Bentley, winner of the 2015 Canada Council Killam Prize. David Bentley, Carl F. Klinck Professor of Canadian Literature, is a nationally acclaimed teacher from Western’s Faculty of Arts and Humanities and the most wide-ranging, exacting, and prolific critic of Canadian poetry today.

His talk, “Simile, Metaphor, and the Making and Perception of Canada,” will be followed by a post-lecture conversation moderated by Paul Kennedy, host of CBC Radio’s “Ideas.”

A public reception in the atrium of Talbot College follows the lecture.

Dr. David Bentley is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and the recipient of numerous teaching awards, including the Edward G. Pleva Award for Excellence in Teaching, the 3M National Teaching Fellowship, and multiple USC Award for Excellence in Teaching awards. In 2004, Dr. Bentley received Western’s Hellmuth Prize for Achievement in Research and, in 2007, the Distinguished University Professor award; in 2009, he was awarded the Ontario Premier’s Discovery Award for his contributions to the field of Canadian literary scholarship. He is the editor of the scholarly journal Canadian Poetry: Studies, Documents, Reviews and the director of its affiliated Canadian Poetry Press. His deep commitment to the mutual fostering of teaching and research in Humanities education has influenced generations of students and critics, and contributed to a national conversation about the importance of literature – and Arts and Humanities more broadly – for Canadians. Dr. Bentley is without peer in the range and intensity of his stewardship of Canadian literary studies.

Western University’s President’s Lecture Series showcases personalities of national and international prominence from the realms of academia, politics, civil service, business, and the arts as a means to engage the campus and broader community in meaningful public discourse on a wide range of important topics. Established and hosted by the President & Vice-Chancellor, Amit Chakma, this public lecture series aims to provoke thoughtful discussion and debate on the most compelling ideas and issues of the day while raising the profile of the University and the exceptional faculty, alumni, and friends who comprise our campus community.
