With her peerless ability to give us the essence of a life in often brief but spacious and timeless stories, Alice Munro illumines the moment a life is shaped -- the moment a dream, or sex, or perhaps a simple twist of fate turns a person out of his or her accustomed path and into another way of being. 

Alice Munro grew up in Wingham, Ontario, and attended the Western University. She has published thirteen collections of stories and a novel. During her distinguished career she has been the recipient of many awards, including two Giller Prizes, the National Book Critics Circle Award, and the Man Booker International Prize. In 2013 she was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. Her stories have appeared in The New Yorker, Atlantic Monthly, Harper’s Magazine, The Paris Review, Granta, and many other publications, and her collections have been translated into thirteen languages. She lives in Port Hope, Canada, on Lake Ontario.

Scott Russell, BA'80, BEd'81, MA'85, Host of CBC Sports Weekend
Veteran CBC broadcaster Scott Russell anchors the network’s Sports Weekend program connecting Canadians to the athletes who proudly compete for our nation. A passionate storyteller, he was recently nominated for a 2015 Canadian Screen Award, Best Sports Host in a Sports Program or Series for his work on the networks coverage of the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games. Russell has penned two books on hockey, Ice Time: A Canadian Hockey Journey and The Rink - Stories from Hockey's Home Towns, which he co-wrote with Chris Cuthbert. Russell's third book, Open House: Canada and the Magic of Curling, a grassroots look at one of this country's favourite sports. In addition to his roles at CBC, Russell teaches a course in Canadian Sports History at Toronto’s Centennial College. 

Janice Deakin, Provost & Vice-President (Academic), Western University
Janice Deakin joined Western in 2010 and has been re-appointed to a second five-year term ending July 1, 2020. Prior to her current role, Janice was Associate Vice-Principal (Academic) and Dean of Graduate Studies at Queen's University, where she had held various academic and administrative appointments since 1986. As one of Canada’s foremost researchers in evaluating the determinants of expert performance in sports including figure skating, martial arts, basketball and volleyball, Provost Deakin has published extensively within her field and has provided technical reports to such agencies as the Department of National Defence, NATO and Sport Canada. Provost Deakin holds three undergraduate degrees from Queen’s in psychology, physical education and education. She earned her Master of Science degree at McMaster University and her doctorate in kinesiology at the University of Waterloo. In 2014, she was named by the Women’s Executive Network among Canada’s 100 Most Powerful Women.
