The exhibition Futurisms draws
inspiration from the influential speculations on “cosmic consciousness” by
London, Ontario-based radical psychiatrist R.M. Bucke (1837-1902), who
envisioned a utopian future of social transformation and augmented
intelligence. Treating the gallery as a laboratory for
visual experimentation, curator Adam Lauder brings together Toronto-based
artists Luis Jacob, Jay Isaac, Olia Mischenko, Turner + Pirbhai, and Young
& Giroux to both recover and challenge the avant-garde’s potential to
engage and transform the social. The artists employ distinct yet complementary
strategies to elaborate critical perspectives on the recent and distant past
while weaving futural fictions.
