Dr. Vicki Schwean, Dean, Faculty of Education, invites Western alumni and their guests to attend an informative presentation by Dr. Scott Wooding, BA’65, DipEd’72, on how to build an effective relationship with today’s teenager.
Speaker Bio: Dr. Wooding received his BA in Psychology and a teaching degree from Western, and an MA in Psychology from the University of Waterloo. After several years in the teaching world, he returned to school, completing a Doctorate in Education in Counseling Psychology at Brigham Young University in Utah.
Over his 30+-year career in Education, Dr. Wooding held a variety of positions. He has been a school psychologist, counselor, administrator and classroom teacher. He has worked for three Boards of Education, in two provinces and in 5 different schools. After retiring from the education world he maintained a private practice in child psychology in the Calgary area for many years.
In 1995 Dr. Wooding published “Parenting Today’s Teenager Effectively: Hear Me, Hug Me, Trust Me”. This book quickly reached the best-seller level in Canada and established him as one of the country’s leading authorities on parenting teenagers. In 2003 he released, “Rage, Rebellion and Rudeness: Parenting Teenagers in the New Millennium” and it too became a best seller. In 2005 Dr. Wooding’s outline of the origins of teenage stress, entitled The Parenting Crisis, was published. His fourth parenting book, Step-Parenting and Blended Families (2008), details how parents should deal with the difficult issues of divorce and remarriage. For 12 years Dr. Wooding appeared weekly on Calgary’s Global TV station as a commentator on teenage issues and for many years he was a frequent public speaker at teacher’s conventions and parenting conferences throughout Canada. Presently he is working on a new book which will update his earlier work by including new research on the teenage brain.
