Hungry for Change Gala 2013
|
The 2013 Hungry for Change Gala is a semiformal concept dinner that illustrates inequality throughout the world. This year’s theme is Refugee Health: A Critical Issue for All Canadians. The evening will feature keynote speaker, Dr. Bhooma Bhayana, on this subject. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. for a cocktail hour with a cash bar and live music. Dinner will begin at 7:00 p.m. sharp. Throughout the evening there will be a silent auction and a photo auction. (Payment by cash or cheque for auction items is greatly appreciated.) How does the concept dinner work? One person at each table of eight will receive a lavish meal while the other guests will enjoy a more basic meal. This is meant to illustrate the 10/90 split: that 10% of the people in the world control 90% of its wealth. Where are the proceeds going?Proceeds of our silent auction and photo auction go to Huruma Children’s Home in Kenya. The Children’s Home provides shelter, education and medical care to more than 150 children. Proceeds from ticket sales will go towards the Global Health Funding Committee, which funds scholarships that help medicals students who go to resource-poor regions for clinical electives.
